In my earlier post Psychic: Time Past and Time Future, I discussed that scientifically, it is, by current means difficult to travel to Time Past, and impossible to reach the Time Future. How can you be at a future event which hasn’t occurred?
On the other hand, it is problematic to alter the past, because as events have already occurred, past cannot be changed without giving rise to paradoxes, like the famous Grandfather paradox. A time traveller goes back in time and kills his grandfather, before his grandfather meets his grandmother. As a result, he is never born, and then if unborn, is unable to travel through time to kill his grandfather, which means the traveller would then have been born after all.
Yet still, it is possible to alter events in Time Future by . Enter Chaos. Chaos, is referred to a state of confusion or disorder, that is lack of ordered state. This is also how we define Entropy. Entropy is the state of disorder, and Entropy always increases as I discussed in an earlier post: ‘Why do things tend to go wrong?’. If it’s so, a sensible brain would then be convinced that Chaos in the universe will always increase!
Joker, in The Dark Knight was right about Chaos. It’s fair. It’s fair because it cannot be predicted. It is completely random. If it is random, there’s no prejudice, which makes it fair.
Another important concept is the Chaos Theory. “Chaos theory studies the behaviour of dynamical systems that are highly sensitive to initial conditions (a response popularly referred to as the butterfly effect). Small differences in initial conditions (such as those due to rounding errors in numerical computation) yield widely diverging outcomes for such dynamical systems, rendering long-term prediction difficult in general.”
“Chaos: When the present determines the future, but the approximate present does not approximately determine the future.“- Edward Lorenz, a pioneer in Chaos Theory.
An example of Chaotic behaviour is the weather. Weather cannot be easily predicted with 100% accuracy as even a slightest perturbation in the initial motion of air molecules will make its long term prediction impossible. Another example is the double rod pendulum shown here. Even the slight alteration in the starting positions of the pendulum combination completely changes the outcome, as clear from the simulation.
Humans, or agent’s of chaos as I am calling us in this post, have upset the established order of the Universe. ‘Everything becomes Chaos’. Joker was right again!
Humans have been held responsible for the climate change that the Earth is going through, most unusually in the last 100 years. The climate on the Earth was naturally balanced before, but because of human activity, more Greenhouse gases are being released and causing the average global temperature to rise. This in turn reduces the solubility of CO2 in the oceans, releasing more of gases in the atmosphere, causing compounded effect on the rise of average global temperature! Like dominoes.
What blows my mind is the example referred by the astrophysicist, Neil deGrasse Tyson, in his book Death by Black Hole. He predicts that the launch of a single space probe (rocket) by humans recoils the Earth ever so slightly, that it can influence Earth’s future in such a way that in about 200 million years, the position of the Earth in its orbit around the Sun will be shifted by nearly 60 degrees! Of course we wouldn’t be around in 200 million years, but we must acknowledge the butterfly wing that we are flapping now, and the storm it will cause later. For the inner terrestrial planets, Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars, there is a noticeable difference within 5 million years, and 20 million years for the outer gas giants. Any disturbance in the initial conditions (positions and velocities) would get reflected in that time period. In 100-200 million years, no calculations for the positions of the planet’s or other celestial bodies suffice.
I am an agent of Chaos; oh and you know that thing about Chaos? It’s fair.
